Ideas For Garden Makeovers

Innovative Backyard & Front Garden Makeovers Across Melbourne's East.

Most of us enjoy spending time relaxing, playing and entertaining friends at home. The backyard especially becomes a private sanctuary where we retreat for peace and quiet, relax on a lounge, fire up the ‘barbie’ and enjoy a ‘coldie’.

It can provide space for children to play with the dog and bring the whole family together, whether enjoying the pool or eating dinner at a table under the verandah.

Even though we spend so much time outdoors, our gardens are not often designed well because we have not put much thought into a garden design that suits our family’s needs.

We all get inspired when watching TV shows showing backyard renovations and often say, “Wouldn’t it be great if we had …”, followed by “We should”, followed by most of us doing nothing about it apart from attempting a few DIY improvements.

Maybe now it is time to put those ifs and shoulds into action with a garden makeover designed to suit your space, include your wish list of features and cater to your family’s needs. Physical landscaping work can then be completed by appropriately licensed landscapers and trades where required.

The garden makeovers homeowners across Melbourne’s north-east, east, south-east and outer east to Coldstream dream about can become reality with landscape design by Living Pictures By Tony Stanton.

Whether you are looking at updating your front garden to increase its street appeal or make it more usable, or you want a backyard makeover to transform a tired, unkempt back garden, now may be the right time to make it happen.

The following examples are projects Tony Stanton designed during his earlier South Australian practice, covering both backyards and front gardens.

Front Garden Makeovers

Increasing kerb appeal is a driving force for many, but instead of thinking just about looks, have you considered making it easier to reach the letterbox on a sloping block? Would you like a wider driveway to cater for teens about to get their driver’s licence?

A good front garden makeover can look stunning and improve how the space functions.

The makeover for this formal front garden complements the colonial look of the house. The main focal point was a paved path leading out to a Weeping Cherry tree bordered with Purple Heart and Korean Box using a circular design.

A formal landscaped garden does not necessarily have to be square or rectangular. A formal garden design is geometrically ordered, so the layout can also be circular or triangular.

For the Craigburn Farm project, retaining walls were used to split the garden into levels. Many native plants were included, with creepers designed to cascade over the walls. New retaining-wall work must be assessed for the specific site and may require engineering or approvals.

Need to add space for a caravan? After more secure or off-road parking? This front garden makeover at West Lakes had those wishes and more, so the clients asked Tony Stanton to develop design solutions. The result combined the required parking with a functional garden.

Backyard Makeovers

Backyard garden makeovers often revolve around adding features or garden design elements with different areas catering to all family members, even the dog!

This courtyard garden makeover for a retired couple at Glenelg gave them a private place to sit, relax and take in the tranquil sounds of water gently splashing from the water fountain.

Not all gardens adjoin a river corridor, but that was the case at Gilberton beside the River Torrens. The clients wanted their new back garden to blend with the view beyond the fence while hiding the fence and increasing privacy. Tony used an informal, more Australian style. Native plants provided colour and attracted Adelaide Rosellas.

Mawson Lakes Backyard Makeover

For a family at Mawson Lakes, Tony’s planting design was intended to screen views of neighbouring two-storey homes and the Colorbond fence. A retaining wall separated the levelled lawn from an outdoor entertaining area under the verandah.
