About Tony Stanton, Landscape Designer for Greater Melbourne

Living Pictures By Tony Stanton combines plant knowledge with a practical understanding of how gardens are planned and built. After more than 30 years designing outdoor spaces, Tony now works with homeowners across Greater Melbourne to create gardens suited to their homes, lifestyles and sites.

Who Is Tony Stanton?

Tony graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Microbiology from the South Australian Institute of Technology, now the University of South Australia, and continued with postgraduate study in horticulture. He later added horticultural and South Australian building credentials, developing a practical understanding of the relationship between garden design, planting and construction.

Over more than 30 years, Tony has worked on complex landscape design projects and developed hands-on experience with concept design, construction details, plant selection and project coordination. Clients work directly with Tony throughout the design process.

Today, Living Pictures focuses on residential landscape design for homeowners across Greater Melbourne. The South Australian projects shown on this site are genuine examples from Tony’s earlier work and demonstrate the breadth of experience now available to Melbourne clients.

People Also Ask
1. What's The Purpose Of A Landscape Designer?

A good garden design looks right, fits the homeowner's lifestyle and responds to the site's conditions and maintenance needs.

Tony considers the architecture of the home, the available space, local weather, soil, desired features and the way the garden will be used. Plant selection, irrigation and maintenance are then planned as part of the whole design.

Tony works with homeowners across Greater Melbourne, tailoring each garden design to the people who will use it, the style of the home and the conditions of the site.

2. What's Included In A Landscape Design Plan?

Typically there are 3 different types of plans.

1. Concept Design Plan Sketch

The first, a concept plan, is drawn up by hand at the first meeting. Tony will confirm the session format and length before booking, then listen to your thoughts and ideas for the transformation.

A sketch is created to visualise what the garden makeover could look like.

Clients wishing to proceed to the next step may then have both detailed hardscape construction plans and softscape design plans drawn up to scale, where those documents are required.

2. Hardscape Construction Design Plan

A hardscape plan can show the location and detail of man-made elements such as paving, retaining walls, paths, pools and structural garden features like firepits or waterfalls.

3. Softscape Design Plan

A softscape plan simply put is all about the greenery, the initial size and location of all the trees, shrubs, turf, mulch and soil.

3. What's Your Process?

Living Pictures makes the design process clear and practical.

  1. Discuss your home, site, lifestyle and ideas with Tony.
  2. Develop an initial concept for the garden.
  3. Progress to detailed hardscape and softscape plans where required.

Contact Tony to discuss the right level of design detail for your project.

4. How Much Does Landscape Design Cost?

Contact Tony for current pricing and inclusions. The right scope depends on your site, the level of design detail required and the plans needed for your project.
